Landscape Design & Planting Plans for Michigan Homes

Design that suits the house, not a stock template. Plants chosen for zone 6a Michigan, sun exposure, soil, and how the property is actually used. Front yard refreshes, backyard transformations, and full property re-designs.

Design that suits the house, not a stock template

Most landscape designs in metro Detroit are some version of the same five plants in the same five spots. We don't work that way. Every project starts with a real site analysis: where the sun lands at 10am and 4pm, where water collects after a storm, what the soil is actually doing under the lawn, how you walk the property, where you sit, what the views are from inside the house.

That information drives the plan. The result is a design that looks like it grew up with the house, not a kit dropped on top of it.

Plants that thrive in zone 6a Michigan

Michigan winters are honest. They tell you which plants belong here and which don't. We design with the ones that thrive, not the ones that look great at the nursery in May and disappear by November.

  • Hardy perennials chosen for layered bloom from May through October
  • Native species (oak, redbud, serviceberry, switchgrass, little bluestem, coneflower, butterfly weed) that support pollinators and need less coddling
  • Four-season interest, evergreens for winter structure, ornamental grasses for fall and winter texture, plants with strong bark or berries for cold months
  • Deer-resistant options where the route demands it (Northville, Novi, and parts of Plymouth in particular)
  • Smart layering, height, color, and bloom time staggered so something is always doing the heavy lifting

Front yard refreshes

The front yard is the photo every visitor takes whether they mean to or not. A good front-yard refresh updates the foundation beds along the house, rebuilds the entry beds at the front walk, and replaces the trees that have outgrown their spot or never thrived. Done right, it modernizes the whole property without touching the architecture.

Backyard transformations

Backyards in our service area come in three flavors: too open and exposed, too closed in by overgrown plantings, or a blank slate after a pool or patio install. We design backyards as a series of garden rooms, a privacy line at the property edge, an intimate seating area, a play zone, a focal-point bed visible from the kitchen window. The hardscape and the planting get planned together so they reinforce each other instead of fighting.

Garden bed installations

A bed is only as good as what's underneath it. We treat bed prep with the same seriousness we treat patio base prep.

  • Bed shaping and proper line work so the curves read intentional, not accidental
  • Soil amendments (compost, leaf mold, sometimes pine fines) tilled in to fix our heavy west-side clay
  • Clean, deep edging, spaded edges that hold or steel/aluminum where the layout calls for it
  • Premium hardwood mulch installed at proper depth, refreshed each spring
  • Irrigation tie-ins coordinated with your existing system, or new drip lines for the bed if needed

Sod installation

Sod is one of the things our crew is genuinely known for. The reason is simple: prep. We grade properly, kill what's there, till and amend the soil, lay fresh-cut Michigan-grown sod with tight seams, and roll it in. Mateo and his crew are the reason new sod looks like it has always been there inside of two weeks.

That extends to repair work too, patching where a tree came out, re-sodding bare patches a contractor left behind, and full-yard re-installs after a build or pool. We also handle hydroseeding and overseeding when sod is not the right call.

Tree care and removals

The right tree, in the right spot, pruned correctly, is one of the highest-leverage moves on a property. The wrong tree, leaning over the roof, is one of the highest-stakes problems. We handle both ends of that.

  • Selective pruning for shape, health, and clearance, structural pruning on younger trees so they grow correctly
  • Hazard removals when a tree is dead, leaning, or threatening structures
  • Stump grinding and full restoration of the spot afterward
  • Replacement plantings, with species chosen for the actual site, not just what's stocked at the box store

How a project actually goes

1

Discovery walk

We come to the property, listen to what you actually want it to feel like, and look at sun, soil, drainage, and how you use the space day to day.

2

Design concept

Hand sketch with plant call-outs for smaller projects, full 3D rendering for larger ones. Either way, you see the plan before we install anything.

3

Plant + material list

Detailed plant schedule with species, size, and quantity. Mulch, edging, soil amendments, lighting, all spelled out.

4

Proposal

Line-item scope and pricing. No mystery numbers. You see exactly what you're paying for, top to bottom.

5

Install

The same crew that designed it installs it. Bed prep, planting, mulching, sod, lighting, and clean-up handled start to finish.

6

Establishment care, first 30 days

Watering schedule, check-ins, and adjustments while everything roots in. New plantings live or die in the first month, we make sure yours live.

Common questions before you call

How long does landscape design take?

For a typical front-yard refresh or backyard planting plan, we move from first walk to a final concept in about two to three weeks. Larger full-property designs with hardscape integration can run four to six weeks. We also do small same-day designs for simple bed refreshes when the situation calls for it.

Do you provide drawings or renderings?

Yes. Most projects get either a hand sketch with plant call-outs or a 3D rendering, depending on scope. Renderings make it much easier to commit to a plan when you can see it before we install. Larger projects with hardscape integration almost always include 3D.

What does the design itself cost?

For most residential projects, we roll the design fee into the install. If you want a stand-alone design with no install commitment, we charge a flat fee scaled to the scope so you have something usable. We talk through this upfront, no surprises.

Do you guarantee plants?

Yes. We guarantee installed trees and shrubs for one full year, provided you follow the watering schedule we leave with you. Perennials are guaranteed through their first establishment period. If something fails on us, we replace it.

Do you handle the install too?

Yes. The same crew that designs your project installs it, which is a big reason the finished result actually matches the plan. From bed prep and soil amendments to plant install, mulch, edging, sod, and irrigation tie-ins, we handle the whole scope under one roof.
